A recent study analyzing 100 million posts from underground cybercrime forums reveals that cybercriminals are facing challenges in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) tools for their activities. The research, conducted by teams from the University of Strathclyde, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Cambridge, indicates that many cybercriminals lack the necessary skills, time, or resources to effectively utilize AI. While AI has been used successfully for social media bot operations and to obscure patterns detectable by cybersecurity defenses, it primarily benefits those already skilled in cybercrime. The study highlights a growing concern that poorly secured AI systems adopted by organizations and individuals could lead to new vulnerabilities. Researchers also noted that some cybercriminals are anxious about losing their jobs in IT due to AI advancements, which may drive them towards more criminal activities. The findings suggest that while experimentation with AI is occurring, it has not yet resulted in significant advancements in cybercriminal capabilities.
