50 European Parliament members targeted by deepfake pornography

In the European Union, 50 Members of the European Parliament, including 46 women, have become targets of deepfake pornography. This is stated in a study by the German civil society organization Agora Digitale Transformation, Politico Europe reports .

According to the report’s authors, the number of female MEPs affected amounts to approximately one-sixth of the total number of women in the European Parliament. Deepfake pornography refers to sexualized images of people created using generative artificial intelligence, often without their consent.

Starting December 2, the EU is introducing a ban on AI applications capable of creating nude images of people. The European Union is also investigating the use of similar tools linked to Grok on the X platform.

On September 30, an interparty group of 119 MEPs sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Henna Virkkunen, and European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib. They called for the effective enforcement of the ban and the prompt completion of the investigation into Grok.

Recommendations by the report’s authors

Austrian Green MEP Lena Schilling, who signed the letter, stated that there “can be no loopholes or delays” in enforcing the ban. Report co-author Benjamin Schulz noted that it is difficult for politicians to avoid such attacks because they cannot opt out of having their images present online.

The study’s authors believe that the European Commission should hold accountable all entities that sometimes, even unintentionally, facilitate the operation of the industry behind such services. This includes payment operators and domain registrars. The report also proposed considering the removal of websites with such tools from engine indexes.
