Bangabhaban employee gets bail in Jamaat ameer's X account hacking case

A Dhaka court today granted bail to Bangabhaban employee Sorware Alam in a case filed over the alleged hacking of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman’s X account .

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zonaid passed the order after hearing a bail petition, a police officer working at the court said.

Sorware, an assistant programmer in Bangabhaban’s ICT section, was earlier produced before the court by police, who sought his confinement.

He was brought to the courtroom under tight security at around 2:50pm. Sorware was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time.

During the hearing, he claimed innocence before the court.

“I am not involved. I have provided everything [information] that the law enforcing agency wanted,” he told the court, adding that detectives picked him up on Tuesday night.

The case was filed yesterday by Sirajul Islam, a member of Jamaat’s Election Management Committee, with Hatirjheel Police Station under the Cyber Security Ordinance.

The controversy began on January 31 when a post on Shafiqur’s verified X handle claimed that women should not be in leadership positions and suggested that women working outside the is “another form of prostitution,” triggering widespread criticism.

Jamaat immediately disowned the post and filed a general diary with police the following day, claiming the account had been compromised.

At an emergency briefing at the party’s Moghbazar office, members of Jamaat’s IT cell alleged that the account was hacked using a government email address -- [email protected] -- which they linked to Sorware.
