Sometime before dawn on Oct. 30, 2026, the world's largest crypto exchange posted a short update that put a number on a very bad night. In its Security Incident Update, Binance said "the estimated total impact sits at around $6.3B." Sky News reported that cryptocurrency worth more than $6.3 billion had been stolen from a major exchange. An unnamed industry insider told Sky News it was "the largest bank heist in human history."

That line is one insider's description. Binance is a crypto exchange and not a bank, and for customers that difference matters a lot. Al Jazeera called the theft the biggest crypto heist in history, and the AP also reported the figure.

What Binance Has Confirmed So Far

Binance chose the word "impact," and the word does real work. Binance said it worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with $3 billion frozen on-chain so far. Some of the frozen money may be recovered, so the final loss could end up well below the reported number.

The company's main promise: "Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company's funds. User funds are safe." SAFU, short for Secure Asset Fund for Users, is an emergency reserve Binance keeps to refund customers after events like this one.

Binance said it has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while it completes security checks. It also cut off the affected address's access and brought in law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace the money. The exchange promised a detailed technical post-mortem and an updated Proof of Reserves once the fix is complete.

One Laptop May Have Opened the Door

Binance's early investigation "suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions." The exchange said it found "no evidence of any wallet private key leak."

That detail matters most for the whole industry. If it holds up, the attacker got to the money through one trusted machine inside the company, and the keys to the wallets stayed safe. The Guardian reported that a North Korean group has been blamed. Binance's statement has not named an attacker.

Elon Musk quote-posted early reports on X with the words "Everyday is Zeroday." A zero-day is a security flaw that attackers use before defenders know it exists.

Crypto prices were already weak. Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) traded at $77,371, down 3.36% over 24 hours. Ether (CRYPTO:ETH) fell 3.99% to $2,223.57, which leaves it down 17.18% over 30 days.

What Customers Face Right Now

While the suspension lasts, Binance customers can't move money in or out. They are relying on the company's pledge to make them whole. Crypto held on an exchange has no Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation coverage, the protection that supports deposits at U.S. banks. If an exchange's reserve fund and company money fall short, no government backstop steps in.

Lesson for Anyone Holding Crypto on an Exchange

When you keep coins on an exchange, you are trusting that company's security, its reserves and its word. This breach shows how one compromised work laptop can put billions at risk, even when the core wallet keys stay safe. Anyone holding crypto on a platform should understand that risk, know exactly what protections the platform offers and in writing, and think how much to keep with any single company.

Two signals will show whether Binance's promise holds. One signal is how smoothly withdrawals reopen. The second is whether the updated Proof of Reserves shows full support after the SAFU payout. Orderly withdrawals and a clean reserve report would mean the promise worked. A long delay would be the first sign of strain.
