Health-tech firm Novocure has confirmed it suffered a cybersecurity incident last month
Reuters reports that the company — which specifically specializes in developing noninvasive cancer treatments — revealed via a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing Tuesday that hackers gained unauthorized access to certain information systems, compromising the internal records of more than 1,400 patients in the United States.
According to BleepingComputer , an undisclosed number of Novocure employees were also impacted by this leak. The company confirms it immediately launched an internal investigation once the attack was flagged.
The SEC filing states that patient ID numbers were among the information that was compromised. Fewer than 50 patients in the western U.S. also had other identifying information — such as general information for healthcare providers — exposed as well.
“At this time, we do not believe that this cybersecurity incident will have a material impact or reasonably likely material impact on our financial condition and results of operations; however, at the time of this filing we are continuing to ascertain additional information regarding this incident,” the filing reads.
Hackers have been targeting the health care sector in recent years: The Lehigh Valley Health Network in Pennsylvania, for example, fell victim to a breach in 2023 that resulted in the photos of cancer patients getting leaked.
Further information regarding the Novocure data breach remains pending.
