Conpet hit by cyberattack, Qilin ransomware claims responsibility

Coverage from Bleeping Computer indicates that Conpet, Romania's national oil pipeline operator, has disclosed a cyberattack that disrupted its business systems and took down its website on Tuesday. The company operates a significant pipeline network, supplying crude oil and derivatives nationwide.

The incident affected Conpet's corporate IT infrastructure, but the company stated that its core operations, including oil and gasoline transport, were not disrupted. The company's website was inaccessible following the attack. While Conpet is investigating with national cybersecurity authorities and has filed a criminal complaint, the Qilin ransomware gang has claimed responsibility. They allege they stole nearly 1 terabyte of documents and have leaked financial information and passport scans as proof. Qilin, operating as a ransomware-as-a-service, has previously targeted organizations like Nissan and Asahi.

This attack on critical infrastructure follows a series of recent cyber incidents in Romania, including attacks on the Romanian Waters authority, Oltenia Energy Complex, Electrica Group, and over one hundred hospitals.
