Back Redpacketsecurity CVE Alert: CVE-2026-56198 – Microsoft
Out-of-bounds read in Microsoft Trace Data Helper allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
High-priority local privilege-escalation risk; expedite remediation, although KEV, SSVC exploitation status, PoC availability and EPSS data were not supplied, so active exploitation cannot be confirmed.
Successful exploitation could let a limited local foothold become full system-level control, enabling credential access, security-tool tampering, persistence and disruption. It is more valuable as a post-compromise enabler than as an initial entry technique, but materially increases the impact of phishing, malware or stolen-user-session incidents.
Most likely attack path
The attack requires local access, low complexity and limited privileges, but no user interaction, making it practical after an attacker or malicious tool reaches an endpoint. Scope remains confined to the affected host, so direct lateral movement is not automatic; however, elevated access can expose credentials, tokens and administrative tooling that support onward compromise.
Organisations with broad Windows endpoint estates, shared workstations, developer devices, kiosk systems or servers where multiple users and management agents run are most exposed. Server Core deployments should be included in asset validation rather than assumed out of scope.
Hunt for unusual child processes or service activity associated with trace or diagnostic components.
Correlate low-privilege process launches followed by SYSTEM-level processes or token changes.
Review endpoint telemetry for suspicious memory access, crashes or repeated faults in trace-handling components.
Alert on new local administrators, credential-dumping behaviour and security-control tampering.
Mitigation and prioritisation
Apply the vendor security update on an expedited, risk-based change window; treat as priority 1 if KEV is confirmed or EPSS is at least 0.5.
Prioritise internet-facing administration hosts, privileged-user endpoints and shared systems.
Until patched, restrict untrusted local execution and monitor privilege transitions aggressively.
Validate update deployment and reboot requirements, including Server Core and ARM64 fleets.
