Back Escudodigital Cyberattack disrupts KFC supply chain, forcing temporary restaurant closures
The incident did not target the fried chicken chain directly but rather one of its logistics providers.
A cyberattack targeting one of KFC's logistics providers has caused significant disruption to the company's restaurant operations in Japan.
KFC confirmed that the incident stemmed from unauthorized access by a third party to the infrastructure of the company responsible for transportation and logistics. The disruption appears to have been confined to its Japanese subsidiary.
In a statement, KFC Japan said the attack took place on Sunday, July 13. Supply chain disruptions began the following day, forcing many restaurants to offer reduced menus, shorten their opening hours or temporarily suspend operations altogether.
In addition, KFC Japan has temporarily suspended online orders placed through its website and mobile app, as well as delivery and click-and-collect services, while efforts to restore the affected systems are ongoing.
At this stage, it says it has found no evidence of a customer data breach and has not disclosed what data, if any, may have been compromised during the incident.
KFC Japan apologized to customers for the disruption and said it is working closely with the affected logistics provider and other companies involved to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
It has not disclosed how many customers may have been affected , noting that the known impact so far has been limited to distribution operations and restaurant services.
So far, no known cybercriminal group or major ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
