'Cybersecurity starts with every internet user ' | Saturday Observer (Eswatini)
The country’s fight against cybercrime must extend beyond government institutions and cybersecurity agencies, with every internet user having a role to play in creating a safer digital environment.
Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) acting Chief Executive (CE) Ozzie Thakatha said the growing sophistication of cybercrime means that no single institution can effectively address the problem on its own. Instead, he said, stakeholders must work together by sharing information, coordinating responses and strengthening public awareness.
Thakatha placed particular emphasis on the importance of individual responsibility in cybersecurity. As more people use digital platforms for communication, financial transactions, business and access to services, he warned that users can become targets for cybercriminals seeking personal information or access to digital accounts.
“Cybersecurity Awareness Month, therefore, provides an opportunity to encourage the public to take simple, but important precautions when using the internet. Users are urged to remain alert to suspicious messages and links, safeguard personal information and adopt secure online habits,” he remarked.
He added that the campaign also highlights the need for institutions to strengthen their cybersecurity measures while ensuring that the public understands the risks associated with an increasingly connected society.
“Tackling cybercrime requires more than technical solutions. It requires cooperation between institutions and informed citizens, who understand their role in protecting themselves and others online,” he added.
