Ecpmf.Eu • October 5, 2026

Leipzig, October 2026 – Mapping Media Freedom , the platform operated by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), was the target of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on 1 October 2026. The attack deliberately overwhelmed the platform’s servers, temporarily disrupting public access to a resource that documents violations against journalists and media workers across Europe. ECPMF took immediate technical measures to restore access, and the platform is now accessible again.

Based on current information, there is no indication that personal data has been affected. ECPMF is continuing to review the incident thoroughly and will notify any affected individuals directly.

“Mapping Media Freedom provides an important evidence base for understanding threats to journalists and restrictions on media freedom across Europe. The ability to document, analyse and make these incidents publicly accessible is essential for journalists, civil society and policymakers working to uphold media freedom and democratic accountability. Attempts to disrupt this infrastructure will not interrupt our monitoring work,” said Andreas Lamm, Managing Director of ECPMF.

Mapping Media Freedom documents attacks on and restrictions against journalists and media workers in EU Member States and candidate countries. The platform is part of the Media Freedom Rapid Response ( MFRR ). The source and circumstances of the attack have not yet been established.

ECPMF encourages partners, supporters and users to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts or fraudulent communications that may seek to exploit the current situation, and to rely only on information shared through ECPMF’s official channels.

Leipzig, 2. Oktober 2026 – Die Plattform Mapping Media Freedom des Europäischen Zentrums für Presse- und Medienfreiheit (ECPMF) wurde am 1. Oktober 2026 Ziel eines DDoS-Angriffs (Distributed Denial of Service).
