Dyfed-Powys Police hit by major cyber attack where staff data could have been taken

Staff information from a police force in Wales could have been accessed or compromised following a major cyber attack .

Dyfed-Powys Police said the incident caused disruption to some non-emergency systems. The force explained it does not currently believe information relating to members of the public has been accessed or compromised .

The force said it is receiving support from cyber-security specialists and its systems have been subject to "precautionary measures" while an investigation is under way. A spokesperson said: "At this stage, our investigation has found no evidence that members of the public’s personal data has been accessed or compromised as a result of this incident.

"We are, however, continuing to investigate whether any information relating to our staff may have been accessed or compromised, and are taking all appropriate steps to protect that information, and will provide appropriate advice to colleagues if required."

The incident occurred on September 14. The force said it remains "fully operational" and its response to emergency incidents has not been affected.

The 999 and 101 services have also not bee impacted but online and email were "unavailable for a period". These have since been restored and Dyfed-Powys Police said the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has been notified the attack.

ICO is responsible for upholding information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. Dyfed-Powys Police continues to monitor its force systems "closely" and an investigation remains ongoing.

A statement from the force released today read: "We understand the potential concern this may cause and want to reassure the public that we have and will continue to take all necessary steps to protect our information and maintain the security of our systems.

"We will provide further updates when we are in a position to do so. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
