FBI investigates Steam malware games that stole money and data
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is collecting testimony from gamers who installed games from Steam that were infected with malware between 2024 and 2026, TechSpot reports .
The FBI's Seattle office is seeking potential victims and believes the attacker primarily targeted users between May 2024 and January 2026. The investigation uncovered several games with malicious software, including BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse / DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.
While most of the games identified were not very popular, they could still be harmful to users. Early last year, it was reported that the game PirateFi contained malware that stole account details and other information. Although the game was released on February 6 and had only been available in the store for a few days, the attackers likely managed to obtain the data of several hundred people.
One of the games mentioned on the FBI website is the platformer BlockBaster, which has been available on Steam since July 30. As it turned out later, on August 30, a crypto-drainer component was added to it, which caused the streamer RastalandTV to lose $32,000. In total, the developers stole $150,000.
