Fermanagh pupils among those affected by cyber attack on schools

Schools in Fermanagh have been hit by a cyber attack that has affected education facilities across Northern Ireland .

An IT system used by school pupils was hit in the attack and the Education Authority said it was a ‘very serious’ incident as they apologised to those who have been unable to prepare for exams because of it.

User passwords are being reset with priority given to those who are due to sit exams.

The C2K system is provided by Capita and is used as a support system.

In a statement, they said: “We understand and sincerely apologise for the impact on staff and pupils; particularly pupils who may be preparing for exams or completing coursework during the Easter period.

“We can confirm that the C2K school system has been the target of a cyber attack.

“As soon as we became aware of the incident, the system managers, Capita, took immediate steps to contain the issue and begin a full investigation.

“The investigation is at an early stage and we are not yet able to confirm whether any personal data has been affected.

“We are taking this very seriously and are engaging with the Information Commissioner’s Office and relevant authorities as part of our response.

“As a critical security measure, a full password reset has been carried out across the school network.

A statement from Devenish College in Enniskillen added: “Students have temporarily lost access to their C2k accounts due to the recent C2k security incident.

“We understand that many students will want to access their accounts to help revise and prepare for upcoming exams.

“To restore access for students in Years 11-14, the following Password Request Form must be completed by the student or their parent/guardian.

“Within a short period of time, a reset password will be issued to the alternative email address that you provide.

“Do not send multiple requests. Students in Years 8-10 will have their passwords reset in school after the Easter holidays and do not need to complete the form.”
