Hacker group claims responsibility for cyberattack on Japanese frozen food firm

A security firm says a hacker group has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack carried out earlier this month on major Japanese frozen food company Nichirei.

Starting on July 13, system failures caused by the attack disrupted cold storage operations and frozen food deliveries.

The security firm, S&J, said the hacker group, which calls itself RansomHouse, posted a statement on a dark web site on Tuesday, claiming that it had stolen some internal data.

The group is known for carrying out ransomware attacks. Last October, it reportedly claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Japanese online retailer Askul that caused system disruptions.

A number of companies in Japan have been hit by ransomware attacks. During these assaults, hackers encrypt computer and server data before demanding a ransom payment.
