Hackers claim 450100 killed in Ukraine based on alleged Rosstat leak

Hacker group Silent Crow claims that Russia has lost 450,100 people killed in its war against Ukraine. The hackers allegedly obtained the data after breaching databases belonging to Russia's Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) together with the Belarusian Cyber Partisans, Radio Liberty reported on Saturday, Nov. 7.

According to Silent Crow, the hackers gained access to the database of Rosstat's Demography information system, which contains census records and information on citizens' causes of death through August 2026. The data cannot be independently verified.

According to the figures released by the hackers, the largest number of those killed — 100,000, or 21.7% — came from Russia's Volga Federal District. More than half, 54.9%, were killed in Donetsk Oblast. Most of those killed were between 30 and 49 years old.

According to the hackers' calculations, deaths increased with each year of the war: approximately 19,000 in 2022, more than 42,000 in 2023, nearly 110,000 in 2024 and more than 182,000 in 2025. In 2026, another approximately 40,000 people were killed, according to incomplete data.

Silent Crow said an average of 18,280 new records had been added to the database each month over the past six months. The hackers predict that the total number killed in the war will reach between 508,000 and 543,000 by the end of the year.

Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, independent Russian outlet Mediazona, together with the BBC and volunteers, has been compiling a list of Russian military personnel killed in the war using open sources. The list currently contains 285,881 names.

According to an estimate by Meduza and Mediazona based on inheritance records, approximately 352,000 Russians have been killed.

In September, British Chief of the Defense Staff Richard Knighton said the number of Russian troops killed had exceeded half a million, while total casualties, including the wounded, had reached 1.5 million. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia's total losses, including those killed and wounded, exceed 1.6 million.

Silent Crow has carried out similar attacks before. In particular, the group and the Belarusian Cyber Partisans previously claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Aeroflot.
