CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - Town officials announced that over $400,000 was stolen from Carolina Beach during two cyberattacks in December.

Officials said hackers stole approximately $487,994.80 from the town.

The Carolina Beach Police Department investigated the cyberattacks with assistance from the FBI. Investigators determined that the cyberattacks are related to an ongoing investigation in another state and are international in scope.

The National Guard conducted a review of the town’s cybersecurity vulnerabilities before the attacks, amid a surge in attacks on government agencies.

Officials said the Carolina Beach Town Council has adopted new policies based on recommendations to strengthen protections and reduce the risk of other cyberattacks.

“The Town is still working to recover the lost funds and maintains crime and cyber insurance, which will provide coverage up to $25,000 of the applicable policy. The Town will continue to work closely with its IT provider, law enforcement, and cybersecurity experts to monitor emerging threats and ensure the most current preventive measures are in place,” town officials wrote.

A press conference will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Town Hall to provide further details.
