Investigation underway as Northern Ireland schools IT system targeted in cyber attack

The Education Authority has said it is too early to confirm if any personal data has been affected following a cyber attack on the IT system used in the north’s schools.

The attack was confirmed on Friday to have targeted the C2k network that provides all IT and online systems in schools, and a counter measure has prevented pupils from accessing GCSE and A-Level study material provided by teachers.

Work to restore the system and allow pupils to log back in will continue throughout the weekend, with priority given to post-primary pupils due to sit exams in the months ahead.

The Education Authority (EA) had implemented a password reset after advising schools on Thursday of an “IT security issue”. This logged pupils out and prevented further access of the C2k system, which is managed by Capita.

On Friday, a spokesperson for the EA said: “We can confirm that the C2k school system has been the target of a cyber attack.

“As soon as we became aware of the incident, the system managers, Capita, took immediate steps to contain the issue and begin a full investigation.

“The investigation is at an early stage, and we are not yet able to confirm whether any personal data has been affected. We are taking this very seriously and are engaging with the Information Commissioner’s Office and relevant authorities as part of our response.”

In a further update on Friday, the EA said its teams, working with Capita and schools, “have begun the process of resetting user passwords so staff and pupils can get back online as quickly and securely as possible”.

“This will continue over the weekend,” they said.

“Priority is being given to post‑primary schools, particularly those supporting pupils in examination years, with progress being tracked throughout the process.

“Dedicated support is in place, including over the weekend, to assist schools and address any issues as they arise.

“We recognise the disruption this situation has caused for schools, staff, pupils and parents, and we will continue to provide updates as restoration work progresses.

“We would like to thank schools and all of our partners for their invaluable help and support at this time.”
