It was belatedly revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' diplomatic institution and research institute, the National Diplomatic Institute, had been hacked for nine months.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 20th, "We urgently shut down the system after being notified of the abnormal access to the online education system of the National Diplomatic Institute in early February this year."
According to the investigation, unidentified hackers took control of servers from April to May last year by exploiting undisclosed security vulnerabilities (zero-day vulnerabilities) of server software and system security settings, and based on this, accessed them until February this year.
It is known that the hacked online education system server stores educational videos and names and IDs of the subjects.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "The attack was difficult to detect using normal software rights after accessing it by exploiting a zero-day vulnerability that even software manufacturers were not aware of at the time. At that point, there was a limit to the response as no security update was provided to supplement it."
"At the moment, it is difficult to specify the details of the leak," he said. The system has been blocked since February, when the hacking was first detected. A related investigation is underway.
