Nearly 100,000 Alabama Power accounts affected by Southern Company data breach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Southern Company, the parent company for Alabama Power, is confirming that an “unauthorized third party” gained access to certain information the utility accounts of 400,000 customers, including Alabama Power customers.

Southern Company said the breach affected roughly 100,000 out of 1.6 million Alabama Power accounts.

The company said the hackers got access to information including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, last four digits of Social Security numbers and other basic account details. No bank account numbers, payment card numbers or driver’s license numbers were included.

Southern Company said it took immediate steps to resolve the issue and contacted law enforcement.

The company is offering one year of free credit monitoring through Equifax to those affected.
