Norway’s defence procurement agency has awarded Marlink a satellite communications framework agreement that includes access to SpaceX’s Starlink network , covering the country’s military, police and security agencies.
According to Norway’s Defence Materiel Agency (Forsvarsmateriell), the framework agreement is worth up to NOK 450 million (C$68 million) and covers commercial satellite communications services through July 2033.
The agreement covers the Norwegian Armed Forces, Police, Police Security Service and National Security Authority, providing access to multiple commercial satellite networks rather than relying on one provider.
The contract was awarded to satellite communications provider Marlink, which is headquartered in Paris and Oslo, and was first reported by Teknisk Ukeblad (via Aftenposten ).
According to the original tender notice , the contract requires access to Starlink, Iridium, Viasat, Thuraya and OneWeb. It also allows future integration of Starshield, Amazon LEO and Telesat Lightspeed .
Norway’s military is already using Starlink. Hanne Stine Kind, communications chief at the Norwegian Cyber Defence Force, said the service supports administrative communications and personnel welfare.
“The Armed Forces use Starlink for administrative purposes and welfare, including email and internet access. The Armed Forces currently have 180 active subscriptions and have not experienced challenges with delivery,” Kind said.
Meanwhile, the agreement has drawn political attention in Norway, with the Socialist Left Party calling on the defence minister to explain the contract’s connection to Starlink.
Marlink, which previously added Starlink to its connectivity portfolio , describes itself as the world’s largest enterprise partner for the satellite service.
