Police have launched an investigation into the hacking of virtual assets worth KRW 44.5 billion at Upbit, the largest virtual asset exchange in Korea.
According to the police and others on the 5th, the National Police Agency's Cyber Terror Investigation Unit has turned the Upbeat case, which had been investigating (internal investigation) before the charges were filed, into a formal investigation.
Police, who recognized the hacking through media reports on the 27th of last month, the day of the accident, have been preparing for an investigation by immediately conducting an on-site investigation into the headquarters of Dunamu.
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry and government authorities believe that the incident is likely to be the work of Lazarus, a hacking organization belonging to the North Korean Reconnaissance General Bureau.
However, a police official said, "In the early stages of the investigation, we did not specify the suspect."
The National Investigation Headquarters investigated the theft of 58 billion won worth of virtual currency stored by Upbit in 2019 and found that North Korea was responsible.
After more than five years of investigation, last year, the National Forensic Service announced that two organizations, Lazarus and Andaryl, belonging to the Reconnaissance General Bureau, participated in the crime at the time.
