( WALA ) - Southern Company says a data breach has impacted 400,000 electric customers in the Southeast.
The company says an unauthorized third party got into its online customer portal and accessed limited account information.
That includes names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, the last four digits of Social Security numbers or business tax IDs, and other basic account details.
No full Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, credit or debit card numbers, or driver’s license numbers were involved.
Of the 400,000 total, 100,000 are Alabama Power customers.
Southern Company says it stopped the suspicious activity and has not found evidence of ongoing unauthorized access. The company is working with law enforcement and is notifying affected customers with an offer of free credit monitoring.
