The Lefortovo District Court of Moscow remanded a correspondent for the major Japanese regional newspaper *Hokkaido Shimbun* to pretrial detention; he is accused of espionage under Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

The name of the detained journalist has not been disclosed. According to Russian intelligence, he was detained in the Sakhalin Oblast allegedly on the eve of his departure from Russia, after which he was transported to Moscow. The FSB claims that the correspondent collected and stored information related to the country’s defense capabilities in order to pass it on, at the behest of a foreign intelligence service, for use against the security of the Russian Federation.

On August 12, Vladimir Putin visited Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and, for the first time since taking office, traveled to the Kuril Islands—specifically, Iturup. This territory remains a subject of dispute between Moscow and Tokyo.

During his trip to Sakhalin, Putin, together with Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liyin, made statements a possible escalation in relations with Japan over the Kuril Islands and shipping in the region. The Russian president threatened a “mirror response” to attempts to detain Russian vessels in the Pacific Ocean.

In September, Putin also blamed Tokyo for the deterioration of relations between Russia and Japan.

This is reported by Russian propaganda media.
