Investing.com -- The U.S. government has issued new sanctions against three Chinese satellite imagery companies, alleging they provided critical intelligence to Iran that facilitated military strikes against American forces in the Middle East.
According to a report from Bloomberg, the move is part of a broader effort by Washington to sever technological support chains for Tehran as the regional conflict persists.
The entities targeted in the latest round of restrictions include Meentropy Technology (Hangzhou) Co., also known as MizarVision, The Earth Eye, and Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Friday that the three firms provided satellite imagery and data collection services that detailed U.S. military activity during "Operation Epic Fury."
Chang Guang, which has faced U.S. sanctions, was specifically accused of collecting data on U.S. and allied forces at Tehran’s direct request. Other entities based in Belarus and the United Arab Emirates were also included in the action.
The timing of the sanctions is notable, occurring just one week before a high-stakes summit in Beijing between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Washington previously sanctioned a major Chinese private oil refiner for Iranian links, but Beijing has consistently instructed its domestic companies not to comply with such unilateral measures.
The U.S. Department of State also designated Iran’s Ministry of Defence Export Center in this latest package, citing its role in weapons procurement.
The Earth observation sector has transformed into a multibillion-dollar industry, with China currently operating the largest commercial imaging program outside the United States.
To mitigate the risks of high-resolution data being used for military planning, the Trump administration recently requested that commercial providers voluntarily withhold imagery of specific conflict zones.
Firms like Planet Labs PBC have complied with these requests, but the ongoing activity of Chinese firms remains a point of significant friction between the world’s two largest economies.
