Washington Hotel in Japan hit by ransomware attack, business data exposed

The Washington Hotel brand in Japan has announced that its servers were compromised in a ransomware attack, exposing various business data. The hospitality group has established an internal task force and engaged external cybersecurity experts to assess the impact of the intrusion, determine whether customer data was compromised, and coordinate recovery efforts, according to a recent report by Bleeping Computer.

The breach occurred on February 13, 2026, at 10 p.m. local time. IT staff immediately disconnected affected servers from the internet to contain the spread. While the investigation is ongoing, the hotel confirmed that business data was accessed. Customer data is believed to be safe as it is stored on separate, unaffected servers. The attack has caused temporary disruptions, including the unavailability of credit card terminals at some properties, though significant operational impact has not been reported. No ransomware groups have yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

This incident highlights a growing trend of cyberattacks targeting Japanese businesses, with recent victims including Nissan, Muji, Asahi, and NTT.
