Darwin woman Claudia Lee was travelling overseas when she became the victim of a phishing scam that saw her ING savings account drained of $48,000.
ING did not fully reimburse Ms Lee until she took legal action, accusing the bank of having missed numerous red flags.
An information security expert says laws should be strengthened so banks bear more responsibility for scam losses.
