Between January 1, 2025, and September 15, 2026, service providers removed 713 pieces of deepfake content involving Malaysian political leaders following requests from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The takedowns were based on complaints and violations of community guidelines and local laws. MCMC emphasized that their enforcement actions are impartial, not influenced by political affiliations. The ministry stated that the enforcement is guided by legal provisions, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025. Investigations leading to prosecution are referred to the Attorney General's Chambers for assessment. This action reflects ongoing concerns regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence technology for misinformation and identity fraud.
