Peter Stokes, a 19-year-old dual citizen of the U.S. and Estonia, was extradited from Finland to the U.S. to face charges related to his involvement in the Scattered Spider hacking group. The group has been linked to over 100 network intrusions, resulting in more than $100 million in ransom payments. Stokes was arrested in April 2026 while attempting to board a flight to Japan and faces charges of conspiracy, computer intrusion, and fraud. The group is known for employing social engineering tactics, including SIM swapping and credential phishing, to gain unauthorized access to corporate networks. One notable incident involved a luxury jewelry retailer in May 2025, where Stokes and co-conspirators demanded an $8 million ransom after exfiltrating sensitive data. The retailer did not pay the ransom but incurred over $2 million in losses due to business disruption and mitigation efforts. Stokes made his initial court appearance in Chicago on June 30, 2026, and remains in custody.
