The Chrome extension 'Save as Image Type' has been flagged for containing malware and was removed from the Chrome Web Store. Users reported that the extension, which had over one million downloads, was hijacking affiliate links to siphon revenue from legitimate purchases. The malicious code was found in the inject.js file, allowing it to communicate with external servers and modify URLs. This practice mirrors previous issues with the Honey extension, which also engaged in similar data scraping activities. Microsoft Edge had previously removed the extension after its malicious practices were documented in late 2024. Users are advised to seek alternatives, such as 'Save Image As PNG'. Google has yet to provide an official statement regarding the extension's removal.
