Article Content
- •Windows settings backup is now enabled by default for eligible Windows 11 devices.
- •The change applies only if administrators have not configured the backup policy.
- •Restore behavior remains controlled by IT admins and is not enabled by default.
Microsoft has enabled Windows settings backup by default for enterprise systems running Windows 11 version 26H2, effective from September 29, 2026. This change transforms a previously opt-in feature into a baseline capability for resilience. The backup policy applies only to devices where administrators have not explicitly configured the backup policy. The tool, originally unveiled in November 2024, aims to ensure that users can restore their settings after device resets, upgrades, or replacements. However, the restore behavior remains under admin control, requiring explicit configuration. This update is applicable only to devices outside the EU Digital Markets Act regulations and certain restricted environments. IT administrators can disable the backup policy through Microsoft Intune or Group Policy if desired.
