Singapore Expands Singpass Passkey to Android to Combat Phishing Scams

On September 9, 2026, Singapore's national authentication system, Singpass, extended its passkey feature to Android users, previously available only to iPhone users. This upgrade aims to mitigate phishing scams by ensuring access to legitimate websites through a unique pair of encryption keys—one on the user's device and the other on Singpass' backend. GovTech reported that approximately 800,000 iPhone users have already created passkeys since the feature's launch in July. The system supports 5.5 million users and integrates with over 1,400 government and private-sector services. Users must register once to enable passkey authentication, which allows login via biometric methods or a six-digit passcode. Phishing incidents in Singapore decreased to 3,104 in the first half of 2026, down from 3,772 in the same period in 2025, with monetary losses dropping significantly. Although the passkey feature is not yet available for laptops and desktops, it is expected to be rolled out by the end of 2026.
