Singapore's Home Team plans to launch its first satellite, codenamed Xplorer, in 2029 to detect hazardous gas plumes, enhancing the Singapore Civil Defence Force's (SCDF) emergency response capabilities. The satellite will weigh 100kg and operate in near equatorial orbit, specifically targeting gases like ammonia. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate space technology into public safety efforts, as announced by Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam at the Milipol TechX Summit on April 28, 2026. The satellite development is a collaboration between the Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) and the newly established National Space Agency of Singapore (NSAS). The Milipol TechX Summit, running from April 28 to 30, is expected to attract around 15,000 attendees, including high-profile delegates from various countries. Shanmugam also discussed the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in enhancing public safety, indicating a comprehensive approach to modernizing Singapore's emergency response infrastructure.
