On October 7, 2026, Telstra launched the Perth-Sydney route of its Aura Network, marking it as the longest route in its national intercity fibre network. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity between Western Australia and the eastern states, facilitating high-capacity data flows and resilience for cloud and AI services. The Aura Network, previously known as the Intercity Fibre Network, is part of a broader $1.8 billion investment in Australia's digital infrastructure. Currently, 9,000 kilometers of the planned 14,000 kilometers have been constructed, with the network designed to provide up to 35 times more fibre capacity per path than conventional routes. Telstra's CEO Steven Worrall emphasized the strategic importance of this route for Western Australia's growing digital economy, particularly in sectors like mining and defence. The network supports various services, including Aura Wavelength and Aura Dark Fibre, catering to diverse organizational needs.
