Undocumented SDR Capabilities Discovered in ESP32 Microcontrollers
Article Content
- •ESP32 microcontrollers now support undocumented SDR capabilities for signal analysis.
- •Multiple projects independently discovered these features, enhancing the ESP32's functionality.
- •Concerns about potential misuse of phase-coherent transmissions have been raised.
Various projects have identified undocumented software-defined radio (SDR) capabilities in Espressif's ESP32 microcontrollers. These features allow the firmware to bypass standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions to capture raw IQ baseband samples, enabling the use of ESP32 as a low-cost SDR platform. The ESP32 can now receive signals in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with several models supporting continuous streaming of IQ data. Notably, the ESP32-S31 can stream at 16 MS/s over Gigabit Ethernet. The discovery was made independently by multiple projects, including ESPARGOS and user /u/h0m3us3r, who shared their findings on GitHub. While these capabilities open new possibilities for signal analysis, concerns exist regarding potential misuse, particularly with phase-coherent transmissions. Current implementations are limited to spectrum analysis and require further development for full demodulation capabilities.
