Back Freemalaysiatoday 713 deepfakes of political leaders taken down since 2025
Fahmi said service providers removed the content from their platforms between Jan 1, 2025 and Sept 15 this year after MCMC submitted takedown requests.
“The content was removed based on complaints submitted as well as breaches of community guidelines and local laws,” he said in a written parliamentary .
He dismissed the notion that MCMC enforcement was selective, saying the commission acted according to the law and disregarded the political leanings of the individuals involved.
“For example, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act outlines the elements of wrongdoing and intent that must be fulfilled before an act is considered an offence.
“The recent amendment to the section included elaborations the definition of false, obscene, indecent, threatening and extremely offensive content,” he said.
Before cases are prosecuted, investigations are referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers. This, he said, provided another layer of check and balance to ensure enforcement action taken was in accordance with the law.
Fahmi was replying to Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Setar), who asked the number of complaints related to deepfakes of political leaders in 2025 and 2026.
The PAS Youth chief also asked the minister to explain how the government ensured MCMC did not selectively enforce the law against those of certain political leanings.
