The FAA has revised its guide for realizing and mitigating GPS and GNSS interference, jamming, and spoofing, adding industry insights to the mere months-old original copy. The March 23 version primarily expands on trends, hotspots, system impacts, and pilot procedures.
Version 1.1 of the GPS and GNSS Interference Resource Guide stems from feedback from the Performance Based Operations Rulemaking Committee’s GPS/GNSS Disruption Action Team, which includes the National Business Aviation Association. Despite the original only being around three months old, the changes were significant enough that anyone who read the first version should apparently read this one again.
“This guide is not just a resource for pilots; it also provides information for operators and avionics manufacturers,” said Richard Boll, chair of NBAA’s Airspace and Flight Technologies Subcommittee. “Because this version is so significantly revised, stakeholders familiar with the version should review the new guide and implement recommendations appropriate to their operation.”
The document now lays out the global hotspots where spoofing is most persistent: the Eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea region, Russia and the Baltics, India-Pakistan border, Iraq/Iran, the Korean Peninsula, and areas around Beijing. None of that is new to operators flying internationally, but it’s at least a useful tip for anyone looking to pick up routes nearby.
Domestic pilots aren’t immune, however. The guide references multiple past US interference events, including a 2022 incident near Denver International (DEN) where an unauthorized transmitter disrupted GNSS reception. The FAA also flags accidental interference from faulty commercial equipment or signal reradiation near avionics shops, which oftentimes aren’t reported until they’re primed to cause a problem.
Enforcement has been a major theme for the agency in 2026… and this is no exception. The FAA is pushing operators to report any and all issues, including documentation of affected systems, mitigation steps taken in flight, and any maintenance actions afterward. The data hopes to feed coordination efforts across agencies as spoofing events continue to increase worldwide.
