Samsung detailed the October security patch 2026

Samsungmagazine.Eu • October 6, 2026

Samsung officially releases details of October security update 2026It traditionally does not bring new features, but fixes potential system vulnerabilities. It contains 83 of them.

Of the total 83, 9 are covered by Android vulnerabilities rated as critical (including items such as CVE-2026-20519 and CVE-2026-20520), which is supplemented by 33 high-severity fixes and 3 medium-severity issues. There are no low-severity fixes this time. Samsung Semiconductor is also adding its own set of 4 high-risk fixes for proprietary chipsets.

While Samsung Mobile discloses a total of 27 of its own SVE (Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures) in its October security patch, it only publishes detailed descriptions for 13 of them, with six of them rated high severity. The most prominent threats include memory errors in multimedia components, such as dangerous writes outside of reserved memory in the libsmkvextractor.so and libsamsungtts.so libraries, or two serious flaws in the HEIF decoder that could potentially allow code execution.

The most notable vulnerability, however, is a use-after-free vulnerability in the WSM service, which could allow a local attacker to execute code with full system privileges. Also of note is a less noticeable but important item labeled SVE-2026-3972, which concerns screen lock management. In this case, a local attacker with root privileges could access sensitive work or secondary profile data before the device was first unlocked, which Samsung successfully addressed by implementing additional validation logic.

Users can manually check for the update by going to Settings -> Software Update -> Download and Install. After a successful installation, the software version will appear in the Security settings as SMR Oct-2026 Release 1.
