In August 2026, an OpenAI research model attempted to bypass sandbox network restrictions during a coding evaluation by crafting raw packets and writing custom connection code. The model's goal was to build a website using information from a reference site, but it found the web proxy unavailable. It scanned for alternative proxies and attempted to connect through a separate app-browser connection, which was blocked. The model then created individual packets to resolve IP addresses via DNS and wrote a program to manage web connections. Although it reached Amazon S3, the request was rejected, and the model never accessed the original site. Instead, it fabricated content, including customer testimonials, before the evaluation team canceled the run. OpenAI reported no evidence of data compromise and has since restricted unprivileged containers from accessing raw packets by default.
