Akamai Technologies is accelerating its push into South Korea's financial zero-trust market with the deployment of a micro-segmentation-based security solution at Samsung Life Insurance. Having secured a named reference from a major insurer, the company is expected to gain momentum in capturing growing security demand across banks, credit card companies, and securities firms.

Akamai announced on the 9th that it has completed the deployment of "Akamai Guardicore Segmentation" at Samsung Life Insurance. The project aims to advance Samsung Life's zero-trust security framework, focusing on segmenting and protecting core business systems while enhancing visibility into internal communication flows.

The financial sector is increasingly finding it difficult to control internal threats using perimeter-centric security alone, as trends such as cloud adoption, artificial intelligence (AI) integration, digital service expansion, and evolving network separation regulations converge. Defending solely against external intrusions has proven insufficient in addressing account takeovers, privilege misuse, ransomware propagation, and lateral movement within internal networks.

Micro-segmentation is regarded as a key technology to close these security gaps. It divides networks and systems by business function, application, and user groups, permitting only necessary communications and fundamentally blocking an attacker's path to other systems even after breaching one.

Samsung Life integrated Akamai Guardicore Segmentation with Active Directory (AD) to apply security policies based on user group profiles. Notably, the solution enables control down to the process level—the actual communication entity—in both Windows and Linux environments, allowing far more granular internal network management than traditional IP-based security policies. The company also leveraged the "Ring Fencing" feature to isolate core business systems and establish a framework for reducing risk.

Through this deployment, Samsung Life identified communication flows across its infrastructure, dependencies between assets, and previously hard-to-detect legacy applications and traffic. An Akamai representative stated, "The solution continuously monitors internal network activity for anomalies, reducing the time required for security incident analysis and mitigation from hours to just minutes," adding, "We will contribute to strengthening Samsung Life's security posture and operational resilience." Samsung Life is also reviewing an expansion of the policy scope after completing the first phase of implementation.

With this milestone, Akamai is poised to accelerate its sales expansion in South Korea's financial sector. Since financial institutions place significant weight on outage risks, regulatory compliance, and audit readiness when adopting security solutions, peer references heavily influence purchasing decisions. Akamai is therefore expected to more aggressively target zero-trust security demand among South Korean financial firms, leveraging the Samsung Life case.

While Akamai has traditionally been perceived in South Korea as a content delivery network (CDN), DDoS protection, and web security company, the Samsung Life win is expected to significantly broaden its standing as an enterprise security provider.

Lee Kyung-joon, CEO of Akamai Korea, said, "Financial institutions are navigating a critical inflection point where they must balance innovation, operational agility, and cyber resilience. Samsung Life's adoption of a zero-trust security model serves as a best-practice example of how enterprises can strengthen security while pursuing business and technology modernization."

A Samsung Life IT security official commented, "As the digital environment continues to evolve, strengthening internal security controls has become more important than ever. With the adoption of Akamai Guardicore Segmentation, we have been able to improve visibility across our infrastructure and implement more granular security controls while maintaining operational efficiency."
