Around 4.9 million people possibly impacted by Florida Student Financial Aid data breach ...
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A data breach has impacted the Florida Student Financial Aid website, according to the state Department of Education.
The breach involved “unauthorized criminal access” to Department information and may have impacted around 4.9 million people, FLDOE said on Thursday.
Personal identifying information, including social security numbers, was compromised as a result of the breach.
FLDOE said current financial aid is not at risk and the breach will not impact eligibility for scholarships, grants or student loans.
The Department said it “immediately activated its cybersecurity response protocols” and worked to contain the incident and secure systems.
At this time, the breach is believed to be limited to the Florida Student Financial Aid website.
Certain websites and online services may experience disruptions as part of the ongoing cybersecurity response and the Department is working to restore full functionality.
FLDOE said law enforcement has been notified and recommends people monitor financial and online accounts for suspicious activity and review account statements regularly.
