Back news.postimees.ee British Unit Brought Nyan Drones With A Range Of Over 250 Kilometers To Estonia
The British unit stationed in Tapa has deployed Nyan drone systems with a range of over 250 kilometers, enhancing the allies' capability to deliver long-range strikes and engage the enemy from a distance.
British Army spokesperson Melissa Terry told Postimees that the allies brought Nyan drones to Estonia this spring during the Spring Storm exercise, and they have already been used in exercises and training in Estonia.
«Nyan provides the British Army with a long-range precision strike capability as part of a broader deep strike capability. It is designed to complement existing fire support capabilities and provide additional options for engaging targets at long distances,» Terry said.
She added that the deployment of Nyan in Estonia strengthens the United Kingdom's contribution to NATO's deterrence and defense and allows for better integration of the new capability with targeting, mission planning, and digital fire control systems.
The British brought the Nyan systems to Estonia in the spring during Spring Storm, as many different allied units were in Estonia at the time, which provided an opportunity to test Nyan's integration into international division-level operations.
For operational security reasons, the British are not disclosing the exact number of Nyan systems in use.
Nyan is a UK-manufactured so-called One Way Effector, or single-use drone, with a range of over 250 kilometers.
«This is an unmanned, self-propelled system designed to complete a single mission along a pre-planned, non-ballistic trajectory. Nyan is part of the British Army's developing deep strike capability, and its purpose is to provide a relatively affordable means of achieving precision effects at longer distances,» Terry explained.
Nyan can be integrated with mission planning and command and control systems, allowing it to operate as part of a wider network, not just as a standalone capability.
Terry added that the British Army uses two Estonian-made launch systems for Nyan: the Ely PL80 and the Threod CATA BT.
The manufacturer of Nyan is the defense company BAE Systems. Nyan is a jet-powered drone with a 2.9-meter wingspan, a maximum takeoff weight of over 75 kilograms, and a payload of under 20 kilograms. According to the manufacturer, its flight range exceeds 250 kilometers, and its speed is approximately 220 km/h. The drone is launched with a pneumatic catapult.
Estonia and the United Kingdom signed a defense cooperation action plan in Tallinn this July, which ended the armored unit concept. The British unit that arrived in Estonia ten years ago relied on Challenger 2 main battle tanks and Warrior infantry fighting vehicles.
As a new solution, a unit was created that is equipped with highly mobile vehicles, modern weapon systems, and drones, and is specifically designed for the Estonian operational environment.
The unit will be integrated into the British Army's reconnaissance and strike concept, which allows forces to redeploy and disperse more quickly than before, a crucial factor in modern drone warfare.
