Welcome to Computing's weekly roundup of tech news in Asia. This time we look at China’s secret cyberattack platform, Bithumb’s crypto booboo and Taiwan bringing some reality into the chip relocation conversation.
Leaked documents suggest that China is using a secret training platform, codenamed "Expedition Cloud", to practice launching cyberattacks on the critical infrastructure of neighbouring countries. It allows operatives to simulate hacks on power, energy transmission, transport and smarthome infrastructure. They also point to a significant role for AI in orchestrating and implementing such attacks.
The documents, first reported by security research blog NetAskari and reviewed by Recorded Future News , describe how the platform divides operations into reconnaissance groups and attack groups with no role defined for defenders. This contradicts China’s official stance on cyber operations, in which it denies carrying out cyberattacks.
NetAskari says the documents were discovered on an unsecured FTP server, and contained source code, training materials and personal files belonging to a developer working on Expedition Cloud.
Cybersecurity and China specialist at cyber vendor SentinelOne, Dakota Cary, said the documents provided “an incredibly rare insight”, noting that this is the first time foreign analysts have seen explicit Chinese documentation targeting foreign networks.
