Container deliveries at Chittagong Port have resumed after truck, prime mover and trailer drivers and workers halted operations for nearly six hours following the assault of a trailer worker.
The suspension was withdrawn after a meeting at the port building on Monday night, attended by representatives of several transport owners’ and workers’ organisations, police officials and port authorities.
Container delivery operations resumed shortly after 10pm.
Shamsuzzaman Sumon, social welfare secretary of the Inter-District Truck Covered Van Owners Association, told bdnews24.com: “We raised our demands and problems at the meeting. [On Tuesday], we will submit our demands to the port authority in a written memorandum.
“After that, a meeting with the chairman will be scheduled. Our demands include stopping the collection of additional fees for gate passes and reactivating some old gate-pass cards for drivers, among several others. We will submit everything in writing.
“They have assured us that they will fulfil the demands.”
Sumon said the meeting also assured that those involved in Monday afternoon’s incident, in which a trailer worker was injured and a mobile phone was broken, would be identified and brought to justice.
Leaders of the Prime Movers Trailer Workers Union, the Inter-District Truck Covered Van Owners Association and the Port Truck Owners Association attended the meeting, along with senior port officials, a representative of the port chairman, the deputy commissioner of police for the port zone and the chief of Port Police Station.
Earlier, around 4pm Monday, a confrontation flared into a scuffle, leaving port security guard Ashiqur Rahman injured.
Workers alleged that a dispute over gate passes between the Trailer Workers’ Association treasurer and a port security guard quickly escalated into a brawl.
Selim Khan, president of the Prime Mover Trailer Workers’ Union, alleged that port security personnel assaulted a member of their organisation after he protested an inflated gate-pass charge.
Following the incident, transport workers suspended all freight haulage operations.
Upon receiving news of the suspension, port authorities initiated efforts to resolve the situation, according to the port secretary.
At least 5,000 containers are delivered a day through the country’s main seaport.
