Ciena will modernize Space Norway's Svalbard subsea cables and deploy optical technology on the new Arctic Way system, extending resilient connectivity across the Arctic ahead of the 2028 launch.

Space Norway has awarded Ciena a turnkey contract to modernise its existing Svalbard subsea cable systems and deploy networking technology on the new Arctic Way system. The project is intended to extend the operational lifespan of Space Norway's subsea infrastructure while expanding connectivity to new locations across the Arctic.

Space Norway provides communications used by research, scientific, and national security organisations. Arctic Way is expected to enter service in 2028 and will be used to transmit data traffic between the mainland, Jan Mayen, and Svalbard, which is one of the Arctic's research hubs.

Under the agreement, Ciena is providing design, deployment, and optical technology, including the Ciena 6500 Optical Platform with WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) transponders and Spectrum Sharing capabilities. Ciena's Navigator Network Control Suite (Navigator NCS) will provide Space Norway with network visibility, control, and operational redundancy.

The upgraded subsea network is intended to complement Space Norway's satellite-based infrastructure, creating a communications setup aimed at meeting uptime requirements across the region.
