CVE Alert: CVE-2026-12665 – IBM

Redpacketsecurity •admin • October 19, 2026

IBM MQ could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code due to a stack buffer overflow when processing TLS certificates with malformed distinguished names during channel connection establishment.

**Risk verdict:** Treat as elevated and expedite remediation: remote code execution is plausible, but the supplied data does not confirm active exploitation or KEV listing.

**Why this matters:** Successful exploitation could compromise the queue manager process, affecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of business messaging. Attackers could seek to disrupt transaction flows, alter or access queued data, or use the MQ host as a foothold; wider impact depends on the process’s permissions and network access. KEV, SSVC, PoC and EPSS indicators are not supplied, so exploitation activity and likelihood cannot be confirmed.

**Most likely attack path:** An attacker must reach a network-accessible MQ channel and trigger TLS connection establishment with a malformed certificate distinguished name. No prior privileges or user action are indicated, but high attack complexity makes successful exploitation less straightforward; scope is unchanged, so direct impact is expected within the vulnerable MQ context, though reachable connected systems may raise follow-on risk.

**Who is most exposed:** Prioritise internet- or partner-reachable queue managers, especially containerised deployments managed by the MQ Operator and clusters with broad network access.

Alert on malformed certificate distinguished names and TLS handshake failures on MQ channels.

Correlate unusual inbound channel attempts with queue-manager crashes, restarts or core dumps.

Review container and host telemetry for unexpected child processes or outbound connections after connection attempts.

Check image inventories and running workloads against IBM’s affected and fixed release guidance.

Mitigation and prioritisation:

Upgrade the Operator and MQ container images to IBM’s fixed releases; verify both components and deployed image digests.

Restrict channel exposure to required peers and isolate MQ workloads with network policies.

Review TLS trust configuration and reject untrusted peers; this is defence-in-depth, not a patch substitute.

Schedule a controlled rollout, accounting for queue-manager failover and messaging continuity.
