CVE Alert: CVE-2026-76479 – Cisco

Redpacketsecurity •admin • October 22, 2026

As part of Cisco’s ongoing commitment to proactive security and product quality, engineering teams for Cisco Emergency Responder, Cisco Prime Collaboration Deployment, Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM), Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM & Presence Service (Unified CM IM&P), Cisco Unified Communications Manager Session Management Edition (Unified CM SME), and Cisco Unity Connection have conducted a comprehensive internal security review. This review resulted in software hardening releases that address multiple internally discovered vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities tracked by CVE-2026-76479 are related to issues concerning improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory that are grouped under the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) Base CWE-22.

**Risk verdict:** High potential impact, but immediate exploitation urgency is unconfirmed because KEV, SSVC and EPSS data were not provided and no malicious use or public PoC is indicated.

**Why this matters:** Compromise could expose sensitive communications data, alter call handling or disrupt voice and collaboration services. Attackers may seek call interception, service outages or a foothold for further activity; the impact is greatest where these systems support emergency response or critical business operations.

**Most likely attack path:** The attacker needs local access and low-level privileges, with no user action required once those preconditions are met. The unchanged scope suggests impact stays within the affected system; lateral movement is not established, though stolen credentials or access to connected management systems could enable follow-on activity.

**Who is most exposed:** Organisations running on-premises unified communications, messaging, voicemail or emergency-response platforms are most relevant, particularly systems reachable by broad administrator or support teams.

Review local account logins and unexpected privilege use on these appliances.

Investigate unusual file access, path anomalies and changes to protected directories.

Correlate appliance events with unexpected configuration changes or service restarts.

Check for new accounts, altered scheduled tasks or unexplained outbound connections.

Mitigation and prioritisation

Confirm exposure across all relevant appliances; obtain current KEV, SSVC and EPSS status to refine urgency.

Apply Cisco’s applicable security release promptly after compatibility and failover testing.

Restrict local access to trusted administrators; review and remove unnecessary accounts.

Limit management-plane access to dedicated, monitored networks and preserve logs before changes.
