CVE Alert: CVE-2026-86303 – 92181

Redpacketsecurity •admin • September 7, 2026

A vulnerability was determined in 92181 markdown up to 058cab0cb7fb245a0ccc6b8446963ff8d573558f. Affected by this issue is the function lds of the file md.c. Executing a manipulation can lead to out-of-bounds read. The attack can be executed remotely. This product implements a rolling release for ongoing delivery, which means version information for affected or updated releases is unavailable. This patch is called c000d2f9cf390c315378d3717cf20911cf3e80a6. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

This is a credible, remotely triggerable parser flaw requiring prompt remediation, although KEV, SSVC exploitation status and EPSS data are unavailable, so active exploitation cannot be confirmed.

A maliciously crafted document could cause the parsing process to read outside its valid memory region, potentially exposing process data, corrupting state or terminating a service. The practical business risk is greatest where untrusted content is processed automatically, such as content-management, collaboration, conversion or document-ingestion workflows; reliable code execution is not established by the available data.

### Most likely attack path

An attacker can send specially formed input over the network without authentication, complex conditions or user interaction. The vulnerable parser is likely reached through an exposed upload, API, webhook or feed; scope is unchanged, so direct impact should remain within the parsing service, though a compromised service account could enable subsequent internal access.

### Who is most exposed

Internet-facing applications and shared services embedding this library are the priority, particularly those accepting Markdown from anonymous users, repositories, or automated integrations. Static, trusted-content use is lower risk but should still be inventoried.

Alert on parser crashes, abnormal restarts and segmentation faults.

Review requests containing unusually deep, malformed or oversized Markdown structures.

Correlate parser errors with uploads, API calls and source addresses.

Use sanitised samples in staging with AddressSanitizer or equivalent telemetry.

### Mitigation and prioritisation

Apply the upstream corrective change at the emergency maintenance window and rebuild dependent applications.

Until patched, disable untrusted parsing or isolate it in a least-privilege sandbox with resource limits.

Restrict exposure of upload and parsing endpoints and enforce size, nesting and rate limits.

Validate the fix with regression and fuzz testing; inventory statically linked copies.

Obtain KEV, SSVC and EPSS values before final queue placement; current evidence supports high priority, but not priority 1.
