A total of 40 students from more than 12 universities in Bulgaria and abroad will take part in the final of DisInfoHack 2026 at the GATE Institute of St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia on Monday. The event will be opened by caretaker Innovation and Growth Minister Irena Mladenova and caretaker Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky.
DisInfoHack is a specialized format combining a research approach with practical skills for analyzing information in the digital environment. The initiative engages young people who want to contribute to creating a higher-quality and more reliable information space. The first edition of the “slow” student hackathon was held in 2025, followed later that year by DisInfoHack Junior, aimed at secondary school students.
The 2026 edition brings together 40 students from more than 10 cities in Bulgaria and over 12 universities in Bulgaria and abroad. Participants are analyzing the Bulgarian media and digital environment, identifying disinformation narratives and developing solutions to limit their impact. The topics they are working on cover six key areas: elections, wars, ecology, migration, patriotism and crises.
The final of DisInfoHack 2026 at the GATE Institute will present the participants’ results, announce the winners and outline key recommendations for countering disinformation and protecting information integrity in Bulgaria. The initiative’s model is also set to be implemented in Poland in May 2026.
DisInfoHack is an initiative under the three-year project CoDE – Countering Disinformation Environment in Bulgaria , aimed at developing information resilience through a scientific approach. The project is implemented by St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia through the GATE Institute, the European Studies Department of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, in partnership with the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the European Software Institute and the technology companies Webcentric, Contipso and Identrics.
