Eagle Mountain internet service goes down again amid cyberattack

EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (KUTV) — Direct Communications said a cyberattack caused internet outages and service disruptions for customers throughout Eagle Mountain.

The company said Sept. 19 that its network experienced unusually high traffic consistent with a distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attack.

The disruption also affected the company’s upstream network providers, causing slow speeds, packet loss and complete service outages.

Direct Communications later said an upstream provider implemented a fix that restored stability to the network. Some customers could still experience slower-than-normal speeds or other performance issues, the company said.

Customers still experiencing issues were asked to unplug their router for 30 seconds before plugging it back in. The company said customers who factory reset their routers during the outage will need to set them up again.

Direct Communications said it would continue monitoring the network.

In a Sunday evening update, Direct Communications said service had briefly stabilized but continued to go in and out throughout the day as the company responded to the cyberattack. Service was down again, the company said.

The company said its Eagle Mountain office would temporarily close to the public until service was restored. Customer service and tech support phone lines also would remain unavailable because the outage affected internet and phone service at its offices.

Direct Communications said its business office and tech support lines would reopen once service was restored.
