Rome-based cybersecurity startup Exein has raised $270 million in a Series C funding round, reaching a $1.7 billion valuation as it builds defensive architecture for artificial intelligence systems operating in the physical world.
The capital injection arrives as the technology sector undergoes a material transition. Artificial intelligence is moving beyond cloud-based software applications and into physical systems, including industrial robots, autonomous vehicles, aerospace infrastructure, and medical equipment. This transition has dramatically expanded the attack surface available to malicious actors, necessitating new paradigms for device security.
The Mechanism of Kernel-Level Security
Unlike traditional cybersecurity solutions that monitor network traffic or rely on cloud-based analytics to identify threats, Exein embeds its defensive technology directly onto the device. The company's core product, a preemptive runtime security architecture named Photon, operates at the kernel level—the foundational layer of an operating system where code executes.
Gianni Cuozzo, the founder and chief executive officer of Exein, noted that frontier artificial intelligence models are pushing the traditional patch window to zero. "Attacks now happen at machine speed, so defense has to as well," Cuozzo stated. "Physical AI is the natural step for Exein: we are building machine-time security for machine-time attacks."
The Accelerating Threat Landscape
The urgency behind securing physical systems is underscored by a rapidly escalating threat environment. According to Exein's internal telemetry, the company now detects approximately 5,000 new, non-repetitive attacks across its network each week. This figure represents a fivefold increase from the volume recorded just one year ago.
Hackers are increasingly leveraging open-source artificial intelligence models to reverse-engineer device systems and identify vulnerabilities. The proliferation of connected devices means that everything from complex industrial machinery to everyday household appliances can be targeted. If an autonomous drone or a robotic surgical arm is compromised, the primary risk shifts from data privacy to immediate physical safety.
To counter these automated threats, Exein is developing what it describes as an agentic security architecture, which it expects to introduce by the end of 2026. This system is intended to deploy autonomous security agents capable of detecting and neutralizing threats without waiting for human intervention.
Proprietary Foundation Models
A significant portion of the new funding will be directed toward developing a proprietary foundation model specifically designed for physical artificial intelligence security. Expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027, this model diverges fundamentally from the generative artificial intelligence systems currently dominating consumer markets.
While general-purpose models are predominantly trained on human-generated data such as text and images, Exein's foundation model is being trained on machine telemetry. This dataset is generated through the company's existing technology, which is already deployed across more than two billion connected devices globally.
Market Footprint and Expansion
The financial metrics surrounding Exein reflect rapid commercial adoption. The company's valuation has increased thirty-fold over the past two years, rising from $770 million just nine months ago to its current $1.7 billion mark. Annual recurring revenue in the first half of 2026 was four times higher than the same period a year earlier.
Exein's technology is already utilized by major semiconductor and technology firms, with customers including Nvidia, Mediatek, Arm, and Amazon Web Services. The company generates approximately half of its revenue from the Asia-Pacific region, prompting the recent opening of its regional headquarters in Taiwan.
The fresh capital will accelerate Exein's expansion in both the United States and the Asia-Pacific markets. The company plans to increase its American workforce, open a new office in the San Francisco Bay Area, and actively pursue strategic mergers and acquisitions to consolidate its market position.
As artificial intelligence continues to migrate from data centers into the physical environment, the regulatory and operational demands for robust security will only intensify. Exein's substantial capital raise suggests that investors view preemptive, machine-speed defense not merely as a technical feature, but as a foundational requirement for the phase of technological infrastructure.
